Research has shown that Android as an OS has overtaken the iPhone in global sales to assume domination in the smartphone sales market. This is not without much thanks to the Samsung Galaxy brand. Android became the top selling smartphone, outselling the iPhone 4S during Q3 2012(Developer Economics).
According to this research, "With iOS and Android forming the baseline for mobile app development, the obvious question is: which is best for app discovery, learning curve, cost and revenue
potential? The shoot-out between the platforms favours iOS, which was ranked higher on four out of the seven platform aspects, with a clear advantage on app discovery (50% iOS vs. 23% Android) and revenue potential (66% iOS vs. 12% Android). The perception that iOS provides better monetisation opportunities is well established with developers as evidenced by our survey data. The iOS platform also leads, but with a smaller margin on development environment and documentation. On the other hand, Android has a clear advantage on cost (32% Android vs. 14% iOS) and a small lead on learning curve.
For most developers, the platform perceptions boil down to a decision about which platform to prioritise, or which of the two platforms to develop for first, where iOS clearly comes on top with 42% against 31% for Android. Several other factors may come into play when making a decision on the “lead platform”, such as prior experience or regional platform mix, but it is fair to say that iOS comes out as the winner in developer perceptions."
For an App developer like myself, and with due respect to Apple's monetization advantage, I will still like to stick with Android. Why? Just like the above research result has highlighted: SMALL LEARNING CURVE. Android is pretty straight forward. However, it will be nice to develop apps for both platforms in order to gain better revenue opportunities. Why?
Research among app developers has shown that developing for multi-platforms or cross-platforms generated better revenue.
Having said all that. I like to make a buying decision among the best android phones for Apps development and testing? Which Android smartphone should I purchase?
Experienced Android app developers recommend buying the Nexus family of Android phones.
I also observed that the Tecno range of phones are now pre-loaded with the latest OS versions of Android and are even more affordable. I am also considering the Race Eagle Infinix.

Samsung Galaxy Nexus

As an App developer, what does this translate for your developer economics? Should you focus on Apple(iOS) platform for your app development projects or should you focus more on Android?
